What to Do If You Don’t Hear Back After Sending a Job Application

Waiting to hear back after submitting a job application can feel like a challenge to navigate. Especially as a young person searching for that first job or your next opportunity, it can be discouraging when you don’t hear anything back. It's easy to let doubts creep in, but don’t worry—this is totally natural! Companies get flooded with applications, and sometimes it just takes time to go through everything.

If you find yourself in this situation, here’s what you can do to stay on track:

1. Give It Time

Patience is key. Companies receive hundreds or even thousands of applications, and sorting through them takes time. Give it at least one to two weeks before you follow up. This allows the company enough time to review applicants, their documents and narrow down their choices.

2. Send a Polite Follow-Up Email

After waiting a little while, it’s okay to check-in. A polite follow-up shows that you’re still interested in the job and reminds them of your application. You don’t want to sound impatient, but expressing your enthusiasm is totally fine. Keep it professional and brief, simply asking if there are any updates or if they need any more information from you.

Here’s an example:

“Good morning Hiring Team at [X]

Thank you for the opportunity to apply for the role of [X]. I am super excited at the
opportunity to connect with the team, and would love to inquire about any updates with regards to the application process.

Do let me know if there is any additional information or documents you may need to streamline the process.

Warmest,

[NAME]”

3. Stay Engaged with the Company

If you still don’t hear back after following up, don’t lose touch. Stay connected with the company by following them on LinkedIn, interacting with their posts, or keeping an eye on new job listings. It shows that you're still interested in their work, and who knows? You might come across new opportunities in the future that are a better fit.

4. Keep Applying

Don’t put all your eggs in one basket. While you wait for a response, continue applying to other opportunities. Set up a job search routine with a schedule of when you’ll look for jobs at a set time every day. Enjoy the challenge of discovering new positions to apply for, learning new things and reward yourself when you’re done by engaging in the activities that make you happy. The more jobs you apply to, the more likely you are to find one that fits your skills and aspirations. A positive mindset can take you far! When you’re feeling low on motivation, reach out to a friend, family member, or mentor to lift up spirits. Don’t stop moving forward!

5. Learn from the Experience

If you don’t hear back, don’t take it personally. Sometimes, they’ve already chosen another candidate, or the timing isn’t right. Use the experience as a chance to grow—whether it’s fine-tuning your CV, practicing your interview skills, or learning from any feedback you get. Each application is a step toward improving for the next one.

The waiting period after submitting a job application can be tough and it can impact us in different emotional ways, but it’s all part of the process. Write a pep talk for yourself as to why you are great! Also ask friends or family to tell you things that they love and like about you! If you start questioning yourself, remind yourself of your greatness.

Keep your head up, stay proactive, and remember that persistence pays off. The right opportunity is just around the corner! Keep pushing forward!
