Guided Imagery: Chill Your Mind, Chomi!

Chomi - ever been in a meditation or yoga class where they tell you to imagine a calm place — like a beach or forest — and suddenly you feel lighter? That’s called guided imagery.

It’s basically using your imagination to help your body and mind chill out. And the best part? You don’t need a class — you can do it anytime, anywhere.

Just close your eyes and picture your happy place — maybe a sunny beach, sitting by a fire, or chilling in your favourite spot. Imagine the sights, sounds, and smells until it feels real.

Why it works:
your brain can’t tell the difference between imagination and reality, so when you picture peace, your body feels peace.

Try it before a big test, a social event, or whenever your anxiety kicks in. See yourself calm, confident, and in control — and your body will follow your lead.

Here are a few simple steps to follow:

  1. Find a private, comfy space and get cozy
  2. Take a few slow, deep breaths to calm your mind
  3. Close your eyes and imagine your perfect place—a beach, forest, mountain, or your favorite room
  4. Picture yourself happy, relaxed, and smiling
  5. Use your senses (sight, sound, touch, taste, and smell) to make your scene feel real. For example, if you imagine a beach, think about the warmth of the sun on your skin, the smell of the ocean, the sound of the waves and seagulls. The more senses you use, the more real it feels.
  6. Stay in your imagined place for 5–10 minutes, noticing all the sights, sounds, and feelings until you feel calm and relaxed.
  7. Remember: you can return here anytime you need a break
  8. Open your eyes again and then re-join your world.
