It’s Okay not to be Okay and Asking for Help is a Sign of Strength

Mental health is something we often don’t talk about openly in my family and community.

There’s still a lot of stigma. People feel ashamed or scared to share their struggles. But I believe it’s time to change that. I want to help challenge the silence and the misunderstanding and stigma around mental health.

In my role as a facilitator at Waves for Change, I see firsthand how important it is to create safe spaces where young people and adults can talk honestly about what they’re going through. It’s not always easy, especially when cultural norms and values make it hard to open up. But when we do, it makes a difference.

Talking about mental health in my own family has helped me understand that it’s real and affects all of us in different ways. It’s okay not to be okay sometimes, and asking for help is a sign of strength, not weakness. I want to bring this message into my community too to make mental health part of everyday conversation, not something hidden or ignored.

I hope that by sharing my story and encouraging others to speak up, we can break down the stigma and support each other better. Because when we talk, we heal. And when we heal, we grow stronger together.

Remember: admitting you're not okay is actually a sign of strength! Don't be ashamed.
